Live: Housing

Downtown Chattanooga's renaissance revolves in large part around efforts to create diverse, affordable housing. Urban neighborhoods with a wide range of houses, townhouses, condos and apartments abound. Whether new, modern construction or revitalized historic buildings, Chattanooga has something to offer every taste and budget.

Single Family Housing

8th Street area

Take a street with potential right in the middle of everything and steps from UTC, fill it with great single family housing on shaded sidewalk streets and you've got 8th Street – between McCallie Avenue and MLK Boulevard. A vibrant, diverse neighborhood of younger students and professionals, this area is the best place to get to know your neighbors while tending to your urban backyard garden.

Historic turn of the century homes line the shaded streets of this gorgeous neighborhood adjacent to the campus of UTC. One of the most sought-after addresses in the downtown area, Fortwood’s homes have a unique level of elegance that is hard to find anywhere else in town. Vine, Oak and Fortwood Streets run parallel between major thoroughfares 3rd Street and McCallie Avenue.

North Chattanooga (Hill City)

This unique neighborhood is made up of hilly, winding roads dotted with 40's style bungalows where young families and hip singles first discovered the advantages of close proximity to downtown. North Chatt, as it's known, is a very well established series of streets, alleys and sometimes confusing roadways filled with great houses, and great neighbors. It's even home to the twice-decorated "Best Magnet Elementary School in America" – Normal Park Elementary. Travel up any street off of Frazier Avenue – Woodland, Forrest or Tremont and explore this great area.

If you're wondering where local legends like Olan Mills and Senator Bob Corker call home, look no further than Riverview. Located just past North Chattanooga off of Hixson Pike on Riverview Road, this exclusive neighborhood is filled with both beautifully restored and newly constructed homes on large lots in a family-friendly neighborhood that you won't believe is so convenient to everywhere you want to be. And for golf lovers, Riverview is home to the Chattanooga Golf & Country Club.

Stringer's Ridge

Overlooking downtown from the north shore, Stringers Ridge is an eclectic hilltop neighborhood filled with historic, renovated homes occupied by hip families. For those wanting the convenience of close proximity to downtown together with the anonymity of living a little off of the beaten path, Stringer’s Ridge is the perfect location. Follow Frazier Avenue past Renaissance Park, turn left on Manning and follow the streets up to the top of the ridge and see for yourself.

Cowart Place

One of the first developments on the Southside, Cowart Place features a unique mix of single family homes. Most are 5-10 year-old bungalow style homes with front porches and plenty of charm. This neighborhood is bordered on the east and west by Market and Broad Streets and on the north and south by East Main and 20th Streets.

Ferger Place

On the National Registry of Historic Places, Ferger Place is a self-contained urban neighborhood full of wide streets, large shady yards and beautifully restored turn of the century homes. Follow East Main Street toward Missionary Ridge and take a right on either one of the two streets that circle the neighborhood – Morningside or Eveningside Drive.

Fort Negley

A newly rediscovered pod of older homes begging for complete renovations, Fort Negley is located just off the hustling, bustling East Main Street area. Many "in the know" have taken advantage of scooping up homes so conveniently located to this intensely developing area. Just follow East Main to Rossville Avenue, veer right and then right again and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of it all.

Jefferson Heights

Newer bungalow housing surrounding a spacious park, Jefferson Heights is a jewel of a neighborhood off East Main Street. Just a couple of blocks down from Main Street's business district, Jefferson Heights is comprised of Adams Street, Jefferson Street and Madison Street. Each will deliver you just off the beaten path into a great family-friendly oasis.
